Not far from a wildlife protection camp deep inside the Qiangtang National Nature Reserve, a wolf on Friday attacked a pregnant Tibetan antelope among the migrating herd, leaving wounds on its stomach and neck.

When they saw the gazelle struggling in the snow, several guards carried him back to the camp to save him. Unfortunately, his stomach was ripped open and his internal organs were damaged beyond repair. The game wardens had no choice but to sew up his stomach and return him to the wild where he was found dead the next morning.

Every year, tens of thousands of pregnant Tibetan antelopes, a highly protected species in China, begin their migration in May to give birth and return with their young at the end of July. Their natural enemies, including wolves and bears, are always there to ambush them. (Xinhua/Jiang Fan)
